Often debated point but theoretically oif you are gaining a benefit from the product it shouldn't go as deductible purchase on your return.

    ie:
Take GAP Fast Food, you are asked to purchase specific meals and comment on them, you might not have purchased them given a choice, its 'incidental' that you may not need lunch therefore you could claim it as an expense on your tax form.

    or:
Take some of the TNS Supermarkets, where you will be reimbursed upton £3-4, given you've got free reign on what to purchase you are gaining a benefit (as probably your weekly shop will be a couple of pounds less), and as such you'd probably find it difficult to argue that it was a valid expense.

This is exactly what I do, if its a meal out/in and I have to consume it to complete the report I put it as an expense. If I have to purchase something like food shopping/book/make up then I don't.

    ****FROM HRMC DIRECT*****

ALL turnover has to be reported things you purchase even if consumed or used is an expnse AS LONG AS YOU HAVE RECEPIT and can prove its for said company

    for example:

30.00 - from RE that is my income for pizza job

21.00 expenses incl mileage pizza paper etc

    9.00 profit

you must report the 30.00 as income but then under expenses youd list the 21.00

Ok, in basic simples i would understand, as from what i read of the previous post i only get more confused.

Would a book bought as part of a m/shop be added to your expenses?

Ok sorry... Let me try again .. :(

IN answer to your question YES!

So you would report the amount you would get paid i.e. 20.00 (10.00 fee 10.00 purchase)

but in expenses you would list the 10.00 purchase.

the only time you wouldn't record the expense is if the item goes back like buying shoes etc and sending them back to the company
