Egg default for £5.81?!

I received a letter about a month ago saying my online Egg credit card had a default notice on it as I had an outstanding amount for £5.73 on it. I thouht I'd cleared this account ages ago but made the payment (regrettably forgetting to print out a payment confirmation). Since I thought I'd cleared the account is the reason why I wouldn't have looked on the online account to notice this! A few weeks went by and I checked the account to confirm the payment went through - it hadn't. I messaged Egg saying:
Hello,
I didn't realise until I received a letter a few weeks ago that I had an outstanding payment to be made of ?5.73. When I received the letter I immediately made the payment using my Solo card. However, upon just checking my Natwest bank statement it appears that the transaction didn't go through. Please would someone verify whether I still have this payment to make as I wuld like to have the amount cleared ssap. I am more than happy to pay the full amount but obviously want to ensure I don't end up paying twice!

Got resonse back from them saying:
Thank you for your Secure Message.
I have tried to contact you to discuss your account further however have been unsuccessful. Please update the contact details we have for you. You can do this by clicking 'change details' to the bottom left hand side of this screen.
I can confirm that we haven't received the payment of ?5.73.
To clear the balance in full a payment of ?5.83 is needed to cover interest that is applied to the account in the time it takes the payment to clear. The quickest and easiest way to bring your account up to date is by Debit Card over the phone. Please call 08456 000 296. We are open Mon to Fri 8am - 9pm and Sat 8am - 7pm.
A Default Notice was issued on your account for the amount outstanding on 12th July. this gives you 28 days to bring your account up to date before being Terminated and sent to an external Debt Collection Agency. This Default has now expired so it is imperative that you call us straight away.
Regards
So..I have just sent another (grumpier) message back saying that I have yet again made the payment but I ask that the default notice is removed immediately from my account. I have changed no details at all for them to not be able to get hold of me so I think they're lying. Does anyone know if this default notice will still be against me and if so, how do I go about getting it removed?

Hello,
I had a similar problem with Egg. I had a loan with them that I paid off early but I received a letter from them saying that if I didn't pay 0.00 immediately they would take me to court. I complained and got £100 compensation!
I think their IT system is crap and therefore don't use them any more.

Oh Gawd, have only just realised that message asks for £5.83 and it sounds like they've already passed it onto debt collection agency! Think I'll have to phone tomorrow and offer them the remaining 2p!!!!0
