Summoned to court over council tax

1) The costs are to pay for the extra costs incurred by the authority to issue the summons and Liability Order - there's awful lot of man hours involved in the recovery of Council Tax and thus they recoup the cost back off those for which it has been incurred.
2) You can challenge it with the council if you want to.
3) To be honest I wouldn't withdraw on that basis (I work in council tax recovery) as you knew the charge was due . If it was a week or so then maybe I would withdraw but not 6 weeks. Again, theres nothing stopping you setting out a case to the council to consider.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
