Don't forget that although the caterer may charge you an arm and a leg, the staff are probably on minimum wage, and if you've received good service from them, I personally think it's right to tip, as I would any other server in a restaurant or hotel. The suggestion of a small cash amount and a tin of chocolates is a nice one, I think.

thanks guys that is really helpful. I too had read it in a magazine, but then they say you should do a lot of things! Cash for the waiting staff and a big box of chocs sounds great.

Not sure how much you should tip, but I know when I used to work for a caterer which did weddings, funerals, parties etc., most of the time we never received a tip, I think most people assume it is included in the cost but the waitressing staff usually only get minimum wage. At one function I worked at, a guy I knew whose daughter had been on the bar said 'that was a great tip you got', eh what tip?! The 'bar' staff received £30 each at the end of the night whilst us waitresses who left earlier (we also started earlier), didn't get a dime! If leaving a tip, I'd suggest keeping it separate, unless of course the waitresses are also serving drinks. Enjoy you day x
