help with ideas of what my son can take to the south of france

My son is off to the south of France for a training camp (swimming!) and as he is a student he is hoping to keep the cost of food down by taking some things with him, he is bunking in a dorm with a small kitchenette and a microwave so basically we want some ideas of things for him to take that will travel well in suitcase but not be too heavy as to eat into his luggage allowance too much - not that he will need many clothes mostly trunks and towels. I have got him some cous cous and some instant pasta, it can't be anything too high in fat due to a medical condition that he has. He doesnot want to buy too much out there as it will be expensive and he does not speak much french!
Thanks

will he eat tuna? John west do some tuna pouches that would pack alright and not weigh much and come in different dressings. there is a range of long-life soups, stews and things called 'look what we found' - bit pricey but very nice I'm told by my daughter who took them on DofE camping weekends. Oh, and those uncle bens express rice pouches. little packs of cereal and (horror!) pop tarts0

cereals breakfast, ham and cheese, he could get a french stick to go with these for lunch, Egg Noodles, pot noodles, instant mash, savoury rice. he could do a little shop whilst there for fresh veg and fruit. :T
What about pitta bread. he could toast them and have filled with various things, cheese, ham, peppers etc.
Go to sainsburys and get some of those little sachets of ketchup, mayonnaise, salt, milk, sugar etc to save big bottles, bags etc from cafeteria, bit cheeky i know but save a few quid0 -
What about noodles, packets of pasta like tyhe stuff you add water to or just normal pasta and you can get them puches of pasta sauce0

marmite, mayonaise0

Thanks for all your replies.
I am only going on what the coaches running the camp are telling us parents about the cost of food, they will be staying near St. Tropez and we have been told that it can be expensive. This is a wonderful opportunity for him to train in an olympic size pool, with other very talented swimmers, time will be factored into the shopping as well as they will have 2 x 2 hours pools sessions a day along with a gymn session and other organised activities!Fibro-Warrior0 -
I spent 10 days at St Tropez, camping, it was beyond expensive. Best pack some coffee, tea etc too. The check out girls at the local shop used to sunbathe topless on the lawn outside the shop during their lunch breaks0

If the coaches are telling you this then there are ways they could help by arranging transport to the supermarket. It's worth your son taking a few favourites (like marmite or something) but, in my experience, the French are doing the same us us to cut back...using Lidl/Aldi.
You could obviously advise him what to get that's good value/easy to cook etc
Obviously speaking French isn't necessary in a supermarket, especially one without a deli counter, like Lidl.0 -
rice, dried fruits?
just thought some more- pot noodles, pasta.
get a fishing rod too, and catch own fish?Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0
