dont so called professionals also take back handers? What about doctors/consultants and all the rest of them? Lets not assume that they are incorruptible.

Let's not forget that it's this kind of tax evasion that is largely responsible for the Greek financial crisis that is threatening to bring down the Euro!

I agree with the previous comment that if someone doesn't pay their taxes, the rest of us make up for it. The government's (at least until the next budget) overspending as it is, so every tax-penny unpaid will have to be met by loans which will cost us all more in the long term!

I wouldn't pay cash to avoid tax but if someone wanted me to pay them cash then I'd have no problem with that.

Agreed! Why shouldn't you take advantage of a discount just for paying cash? I'm not the one not paying taxes. Even if they said that was the reason why, where's their proof that I was part of it? I don't see how I could be committed of a crime just for paying less. It's still a matter of that particular tradesperson not paying their taxes....

If they didn't want a paper trail (say because they were avoiding taxes!), then there are certain areas I wouldn't pay cash for, e.g building works, as another poster says.

But I don't think paying in cash = tax evasion - I've got a discount by paying cash on the highstreet - and I sure as hell don't think they were commiting tax evasion / fraud!!

My concern is that you can't really get a worthwhile guarantee if you were to pay cash in hand - don't you think?
Do correct me if I'm wrong - I'd rather pay the right price and have full comeback
Yes, I agree I would rather have the comeback if, say having a new boiler installed but little stuff with only a little risk then I would go for the 15%.

Just to let everyone know that not all builders are corrupt.

My partner is a builder & frequently gets asked "How much for cash?". He always says no, as if the money doesn't go into the bank how does the mortgage, council tax etc get paid?

Also, if an invoice does get paid in cash then it goes straight into the bank and is accounted for.

Sometimes it's difficult to get a tradesman to do a small job and you end up having to pay in cash.

However, for anything big I would pay by cheque and want a proper invoices and guarantees. Luckily we have managed to 'collect' some good regular tradesmen.

My neighbour had his soffits replaced just before we did and paid less than half. I still think he was mad.

I had not understood how much theft had been accepted as a way of life under the labour government until this test. Now I can begin to believe the - 'I'm entitled' - 'I get more on the dole - why shouldn't I take it - everybody else does' - 'but where else can I get £45000 and a free house - I can't earn that'- 'but its only fiddling the taxman' - 'It isn't me - its the person fiddling the really taxman thats to blame - I'm just taking my cut' etc etc etc - the excuses for all the immoral people - and don't worry - I include the Blairs and the Woodleys and the Cleggs and the Camerons - and Cameroons and that pillar of society from the Lib Dems who 'accidently charged the taxpayer for dodgy claims' and absolved himself (in his eyes) by giving what he admitted to back. Sorry to all you absolvers or people - if thats the right word - in my view you are common thieves - stop it and maybe we can begin to build a better society for ALL, not just the people who know how to thieve better than others like - well do I need to say who?

Unfortunately it comes down to a game-theory problem,

If you are the only person cheating the system then the system doesn't really suffer, and you do OK for it. Of course, those that did contribute get diddled,

But once everyone realises that they can cheat the system, the system collapses, because it can't cope if no-one is contributing,

In other words, by not cheating the system I am actively making life easier for those who do cheat the system,

Kind of makes you wonder why we ever bothered with the "Great" in "Great Britain",

  • stunned that the majority of people think this a legitimate way to go. Says so much about the public feelings towards building our economy. At the very least its illegal! Shocking that most would help fund criminality.
