Protein! I have no idea what causes splitting nails but I used to have it all the time, lasting about 14 years and it was a nightmare! then 2 years ago I boosted my protein intake and it made a noticable difference in both the stregnth of my hair and nails, my nails don't split anymore.

Rule of thumb is 1-1.5grams of protein per 1 kg of body weight (2grams if your muscle training or a guy). An example would be that 100grams of chicken has about 25grams of protein, 100 grams of tuna has about 25grams of protein in, 1 egg has about 3-6grams of protein in (depending on the size), you do need to eat enough protein every day to see a difference though.

if it had just been one or some nails I might have thought that but it's increased to the point it's all of them
Some nail infections can spread to other nails, not just affect one nail.
    Have you tried hair/skin/nail supplements?
I get paid to smell great :j

have you had your thyroid checked?

I asked my GP briefly on a routine pill visit if it the nail problem could be connected to my thyroid (as a friend had suggested that too) and all I got was a rant from her about how everyone thinks their thyroid is to blame for all sorts of helath issues so unless I could get it checked by someone other than my dragon of a GP that's a non starter I'm afraid.:(

I tried both Imeeden and Perfectil for 3 months each and to no avail (and they were outrageously expensive).

I've ordered the Nailtiques and I'll give it a shot.

I'm sure NailEat was something I tried back before the Nail Envy and didn't have any success

I do also remember using a tiny bottle of something years ago which you painted only on the tip of the nail and I recall it being successful. It was pricey at the time and the bottle was minute - can't remember what it was called though!

  • I did a manicure course a few years back and the tutor told us that protein was important for good nails.
I also found that Nail Drink was good for mine.
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

I would reccommend as a quick fix 'Mavala Scientifique'

I brought some when my nails started splitting and peeling quite badly a couple of years ago.
I was impressed because theres no mucking about, you just apply to your nails it dries in a second, and I saw results in a few days.

The bottle lasts for AGES. And it really helped my nails back into shape quickly. I've still got the bottle and it's still virtally full.

The downside for some might be is it's pricey, and I think it contains Formaldehyde,

that's the tiny bottle I had years ago - at least I know now what it was!

I've bought the Nailtiques formula 2 and have started to use it so I'll report back after a week or 2 on progress (or not). Fingers crossed - well maybe not I might break a nail!

I had my nails done lately as a special treat and the manicurist said that some of the sally hansen treatments are really problematic because they dry your nails out a lot and leave them more prone to cracking. She recommended Jessica nail polishes which she said were moisturising. I do think her point about varnishes etc drying your nails out were right, can't say for sure the jessica thing works though :)

I'd advise not using any treatments for a while and massaging some kind of oil or cream into your nails regularly. I use a cuticle oil but also use vaseline in between times since I have a little pot in my bag for lips anyway. Seems to help :)

I bought a small tube of nail an cuticle cream from no 7 and that really did the trick. The reasoning behind that is having a small tube I kept it next to the sofa and got into the habit of using it every night just while I was sitting watching tv. I couldn't seem to remember to rub olive oil or other creams in. When that ran out I started using a Bodyshop sort of pen with a brush on the end with almond oil in it and that's even better. My nails are so much stronger but it has taken afew months.

ELF do a cuticle pen for £1.50 if you are interested in this product (Bodyshop products are no more natural than any other brand unfortunately).
