Old debt resurfacing - letters assistance?

Hi all,
I have looked throughout numerous posts and couldn't find anything so was wondering if someone could help?
I ran up some student debts 6 - 8 years ago, did the foolish thing of running away and on Saturday I got a letter from 1st Credit Ltd saying they are trying to trace me and wanted confirmation that I am the person in question... They continue to say that in 10 days if there is no response they will send me the relevant information...
I have spoken to national debt helpline and was advised not to call but to send a letter requesting to know what it is they want? I.e. information on the debt etc...
I can't see this debt on my credit file sadly but they have done recent searches on my file trying to locate me...
Does anyone know what I should put in a letter requesting this information or even if there are templates anywhere?
Any help gratefully received
Many Thanks!!!

If you have not paid or acknowledged the debts of a period of at least 6 years (5 in Scotland) the debt is statute barred and does not have to be paid.
never the less, send the prove it letter to them first - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=11570893&postcount=2
If the debt is that old, send the statute barred letter - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=11571227#post11571227Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.

Thank you very much for this! Should I also send a request for the copy of the CCA at some stage or should I just send the 'prove it' letter first and await their findings?0

Don't start sending CCA requests, if the debt is that old it won't be needed anyway.
But a lack of a valid CCA only means no CCJ, The debt still exists and they could still muck up your credit file. Although it is so old they probably can' touch the credit file i wouldn't jump to CCA at such an early stage unless you understand them.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
