How long to get a tax rebate???

All of last year I was on the BR tax code. I only earnt 8K as this was a temping as and when job. I have paid tax on the whole lot. I sent a letter and my P60 to the tax office 3 weeks ago so was wondering when the turn around would be to get a refund. Also last week I started a new job so would the tax be refunded through my emplyer or a cheque from the tax office?

Thanks!

P.s. I know people can get bored with replying to tax questions this time of year!

I wonder why you didnt get this sorted during the year? Now you are in a queue with thousands of others all wanting a refund. Most tax offices have 8-10 weeks post on hand.
Your repayment will come via a cheque from HMRC.

  • Fengirl, I only got it sorted now as unfortunately I only noticed this mid Feb 2010. I spoke with the Tax office then and they said I will have to wait until my P60 to make a claim.

I do usually check my tax codes etc when moving jobs but for some reason i didn't or if I did at the beginning and presumed my usual tax code would be used as never worked as a temp through an agency before so presumed it was something to do with that.

Looking back you can ask why this long but we all make mistakes. Believe me I would have def not have paid all this tax when I knew i shouldn't be, who would!?

The current post backlog is 10 to 12 weeks from posting.

Why not try contacting HMRC by phone and checking to see if they hold all your information (p60's etc). If they do they will send a referral to customer operations to have is d/w. It will be mid June early July before you get the refund, but still better than 12 weeks waiting.

  • Had to ring the tax office today to sort out my new tax code which my previous empoyer did not change for this financial year.

Anyway, I asked about the refund and they said I was looking at the end of June until I get my money.

Oh well, least I can plan now I roughly know how long it will take. Although I never really though it would be sooner than end of may due to the increase in volume of work etc. They said they have just had a new system put in andit was causing delays!!??

I had a very pleasent call in April of this year from the tax office saying that i was due a tax refund (i dont know how much which is driving me crazy and they wont tell me) i called them up a month later when i still hadn't received it as the post in this area is a bit hectic. Anyway just 2 weeks later i received a letter from them saying that they had a new system in place and the staff wont be receiving training on the system until may which would then mean that i would have to wait until the end of JUNE!!!!!

So annoyed too as i want to know how much it is and i am a severly impatient person having to wait that long...............

    HMRC who'd 'ave em!
