Employment agency referencing - anyone know about it ?

I was speaking to an agent I have known for over a decade, before I lived overseas, and he said that if he places me in a job they would have to reference check / credit score me. I don't like the sound of that as I had some issues when I got divorced which are still on my file.

Just how to they make a Yes / No decision ? Some people mentioned Kroll ? I know who they are but they cannot check more than what is public information can they ?

    If they say yes, they get paid thousands of pounds.
    If they say no, they get nothing.

    That's normally how they make their decision.

    Is it a full reference check AND credit check or just a reference check?

    There are various levels of employee vetting offered by companies who do this, and even for the basic checks it ain't cheap. The seniority of a position would generally govern how in depth a report that an employer would request.

    If its a basic type of check then credit check wise I think they only look for CCJ's. Reference check wise they'll check references for the most recent two or three employers. Employment history wise they check job titles on CV's match actual job titles held, dates of employment stated are correct, gaps in employment etc.
    Kroll is pretty much the daddy of investigative services. Its also expensive. And they can check what they like, but in your case checks should be based on what is relevant to the position and should be done only with your express consent (though some will still furtively do it regardless).
