Charities have to be registered and will therefore have a charity number.

If there's no charity number on the flyer then you can be sure it's a money making scheme lining somebody's pockets.

Saying that, even if there is a charity number, if it's not a charity you've heard of you can check them out on the Charity Choice web site. It won't list all charities but you should find most of them.

  • I left the bags out the front with the stickers on them and they didnt come to pick them up!

Also those stickers come in through my letterbox nearly every day and my toddler sticks them on the wallpaper:mad:

Yes, all charity reg numbers start with an "x"

I used to work for age concern, now age NI, and we always got complaints about cowboy collectors!
  • In the back of my mind I vaguely remembered hearing something in the past about bogus charity collectors .... spike7451's post made interesting reading.

The flyer through my door quoted a 'company registration number' ...which on further investigation proved to be waste of ink, but they could just as easily have quoted a (fake) 'registered charity number'...

The flyer didn't give a website,or telephone number...they did however provide a 'support and help' hotmail address ...which anyone could've set up.

I'm sure I must seem really 'sad' ( with far too much time on my hands :rotfl:) to have spent so much time researching this crowd ...especially when most of us seem to take our cast-offs directly to the charity shops anyway, but if I thought this thread might prevent even a handful of people from inadvertantly helping line the pockets of these cowboys, I'd be a happy camper.
