Suppose it depends what part of the country you are in.

For instance I'm on £16,500 and my OH is on £16900 (for call centre work) which is pretty good in this area. Personally I class a low income as anything near NMW. Mind you I know my dad is on £24,000 and he classes that as average.

It depends on so many factors and what you are referring to ... for example low income for Income Support purposes is very low (don't know the exact figure, sorry) ... low income for tax credits purposes is up to £17,000 approx, the cut off for working tax credits... some reports in the media have been saying low income is anything under £25,000 ... some £45,000 - £50,000.

Like the PP said, it then depends where you live. £45,000 to someone in London may not go far, to me in South Wales it would be a very good wage!

Personally, I would say about £15,000 for an annual wage for each person in the house would be pretty average. I mean assuming there's two parents, that would be £30,000 which isn't all that bad...

I'd say low income is £13,000 and below.

And higher income is probably £20,000 and above.

But I may be wrong, that's just my opinion.

Last I heard the National Average Wage was about £24k but that was some time ago and I can't remember where I heard it.

I think if you earn less than £13,300 you can claim WTC to take you up to £13,300, so I guess the Government believes that anything below £13,300 is a low wage for a single person over 25.

2 years ago my husband earned approx £16,000 and last year we got a small amount of working tax credits as a result. I think the cut off for working tax credits is between £16,000 and £17,000.
