Would you complain?

Hi there,

This is my first post so apologies if it is in the wrong place!

On 3rd May, we purchased a sideboard from Laura Ashley in their mid-season sale. It was reduced down to £598.50 which was a 37% saving. Yesterday (13th May) I received an email from Laura Ashley advising me that the very same sideboard (and in fact the entire Garrat range) was now half price!! The sideboard is now £475!!!!! Needless to say I am not impressed, considering their mid-season sale only ended 10 days ago!!!

Do you think I should email and complain or just chalk it up to "that's life"?

No, we don't spend thousands at Laura Ashley but I love L.A. homeware and buy bits and pieces from them when we are able to. Plus we are now replacing our old, cheap dining room furniture with Laura Ashley items as and when we can afford it.

Hubby reckons I should email and complain but I don't want them to think I'm a cheapskate :D

What do you think?

Susan

I don't think they'd do anything- at the end of the day you were happy to buy it for that price on that day.

I was equally peeved when Debenhams reduced a top I'd bought in the sale by a further 20% the next day, so I took it back and asked for a refund and buy it back (they didn't have out in my size else I'd have just refunded and bought it back at a different till) and they basically said no for the above reasons, but eventually let me do it anyway.

You won't lose anything by complaining. I'd give it a go and maybe you'll get a goodwill gesture of some sort. It is annoying but as you said "that's life".

I would, if you don't ask you don't get. Some stores have a policy on this so you could try. It's not like its just a couple of pounds.

    they can only say no

I have had trouble with Laura Ashley in the past................. don't think they know what a good will gesture is.

What does it matter if they think you are a cheapskate?

I assume you already have the sideboard (not sure what LA delivery is)? If not you might have a bit more of a chance.

My motto is if you don't ask you don't get.

I'd say something, mainly to get it off my chest, who knows, they may refund something or offer a voucher but whatever they do will be as a good will gesture rather then something they owe you (know your already aware of that).

I'd write them a letter explaining your experience and how it has made you think and feel differently about LA- how next time you may not have the same confidence in buying things from them if your going to feel as hard done by incase they are reduced at such a level so soon after purchase. All they can do is reply, nothing bad will happen (-I don't think!)

You could give it a go. I have an account card with them that had price protection for 100 days and I have claimed on it before but they finished that in december last year that and the reward vouchers are the only reason I took it. I too am disappointed I spent over £1000 in february with them and don't think it looks to good for the future of LA with all the sales they're having lately.

If it hasn't been delivered, see if you can cancel your order.

If it has been delivered, see if you can find even just a tiny flaw & ask for a refund. Then go & buy another at the lower price.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I would give it a go. We were in a similar situation the other year with Sofa Sofa... ordered a couch and 2 chairs at a total of about £800, and were waiting 2-3 weeks for delivery. In the meantime, we received a sale brochure in the post with the exact same suite reduced by a further 10% - I was not happy at all that they were sending me this info in the post knowing that a) I'd already ordered my goods at the higher price and b) they hadn't even arrived yet. I emailed the company telling them this, and as a "gesture of goodwill" they actually refunded me the extra 10%. :)
Like the other posters say, if you don't ask you don't get!! They can only say no... Always give it a try.
  • Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. I have checked their website today and the made to order furniture is now only 25% off! I wonder if loads of people complained? :D

I have drafted an email but not sure it has such clout now that the half price offer is no longer. Ah well.

And yes, the sideboard has not even been delivered yet!!!!!!!! It is due middle of June!!!! That is what is irritating my hubby most of all, that they dropped the price before we even received the item!!!!!

    Many thanks everyone.
