50th birthday ideas

Hello!
I am looking for some help, it is my dads 50th birthday and i am struggling to think of anything special to get him.
Has anyone had a 50th birthday, or anyone in their family, and if so what did you get?
Thank you!

Not sure how much you want to spend (or where your dad stays) - for my father's 50th we gave him a 45 minute helicopter flight from a reasonable local airport which flew over the areas surrounding where we stay.

Another thing which was a big success was seaplane flights which we bought both mum and dad for Christmas one year

On the travel side what about a day trip on an old steam train

if you are looking for something more reasonable what about his own whisky?

If he is interested there is always a years membership for say the National Trust.

Another option (although it was quite time consuming) - for an uncle in Canada who was 60 I put together a photo album of lots of places and people from his past (some old, some new photos) and took a video around the area where he grew up. That was slightly different I guess because he hasn't been back "home" in 40 years but you could adapt it slightly.

All the links I've posted are local to Central Scotland but it's just to give you an idea - I'll have a think about more options.

Very much depends on his interests.

I know one guy who got taken for a paintball experience and he hated it - totally.

    Cookery class?
    Balloon Flight?
    Driving Experience?
    Spa day?

I'm doing the same for my dad, found you can get coins from 1960 - in keyring/necklace/bookmark form if you look for them...

I think people here are on the right line with an "experience". For my 50th a few years ago I was given a theatre trip, the cost of a course i wanted to do, a day out with a lovely meal, salon vouchers and that sort of thing. I loved them all and none of them required me to find space for stuff - which i have plenty of already.

Re.experiences...If he's a football /sports fan, tours of the ground can often be bought in voucher/card form.
  • If he's a football fan, actually any sports fan, you might be able to buy him a share for the club he supports. My brother got a share in Man City, before it got bought by the bajillionaires and he had to give it up! - he was really proud of it before that and he even got included in shareholder meeting invites!
