SAHM to 2 boys Money Diary

Sorry I've been MIA the last the few days.
Had a really fab weekend - gotta say I'm really happy at the minute. DH had a half day on Friday and helped out with the kids and did lots of outside jobs for me. Saturday was busy with a vets trip (more on that in a min), haircuts for the boys and then a lovely get together with friends. Today we've been visiting and then DS said he wanted to go to a local beauty spot for the park and ducks. As it was a fab day and we were already out, I nipped by the supermarket and got us some picnic bits and we spent a few hours there. If I had planned in advance I could have made a picnic but it was last minute and it was cheaper than eating at the park cafe. Tonight we've had a BBQ again with leftovers from yesterday.
So not a cheap weekend with the get together but really enjoyable and not over spent in shops or anything so feel it okay to have a fun weekend and not be focusing on money.
Now the bad bit. One of my beloved dogs wasn't right yesterday and after havin a look at him realised there was something wrong with his tail. Got an appointment at the vets, he's got an absess on a growth that had to be drained and med's to treat the infection. But vet is almost certain he will need an operation on his tail to remove the growth and the infected tissue - prob nearly all his tail off. Then we need to find out why he's got a growth - more than likely the big 'C' as he has other symptons. I'm simply heartbroken, he's my oldest dog and had him before the kids so he really is my baby.:( Think I'll end up taking him back to vets tomorrow as its grim again already.
So fab weekend but with a major low. Of course he's not insured and the vet thinks they wouldn't pay out anyway as its a problem stemmed from having his tail docked - thank god this is illegal now:mad:. To be honest, it costs what it costs to have my boy okay.Trying to do one positive thing (however how small) per day to be mortgage free/reduced and be frugal but still enjoy life!Debt LBM Feb 2010 = £7841.97/ now £0, MFW 2011 = £9k in savings

So sorry to hear about your dog. Not what you need to hear really. Is he otherwise fairly well in himself or is he unwell?
I am really glad to hear otherwise you have had some quality time with your family and friends. Just what is needed to stop you maudling on the money.
We had a similar what the heck moment at the supermarket and bought some of those boxed salads. Although expensive for what they are, we had them with a BBQ yesterday and took a picnic out today, so not bad value in the end, and as i said to DH, much cheaper than a takeaway. I'm sure we can regroup and make other savings next week to help balance the books but the time we had enjoying this weekend would not be able to be replaced.0 -
Thanks Michelle. He's not been 'right' for a while but always been a funny sort with anyone but me so we thought it was just his funny ways but after researching, he has a lot of symptoms. A few little bumps that are new, he's not eating as much and has gone a bit thin, he's very snappy and short tempered. Of course, he could get the all clear but I have this awful feeling about it all. The main thing is he's really snappy now and he's never, ever looked at the kids but if he is poorly, I can't risk him getting snappier around the them. A close family member had a finger bitten off recently by their dog so we won't take any chances but its still my baby.
Sounds like you had a fun weekend too! Your right, it was what I needed - a chance just to be me again without worrying about things. Those salads sound like a good thing, a little treat and more time to enjoy the weekend. Sounds like you've been busy this weekend - in a nice enjoyable way that is! I think it's okay to have a little splurge now and again, if you can easily balance it out then it's not a problem is it? I think it's important to be aware of the financial situation but also aware that it is good to enjoy a little spontaneity and a treat here and there isn't out of the question is it?
Sorry to hear about your dog. We don't have any pets at the mo but the parents still have one of the cats that was at home when I still lived at home so I kinda know that attached feeling (I still feel like he's "my" cat as well if that makes sense?) and know that feeling of wanting to go as far as it takes to look after them - they're like one of the family aren't they?Dealing with my debts!Currently overpaying Virgin cc -balance Jan 2010 @ 1985.65Now @ 703.63

It is really strong the bond you get with an animal. We all cried when mum had her westie put to sleep last year. She got it when i was 17 and lived at home, so it was a proper member of the family. Also, my nana bought it for my mum so it felt like another loss there as it was our last connection. Strange.
Agree with not having him being short tempered round the kids. After all, they are a bit thoughtless when toddlers aren't they and also heavy handed. Not worth risking. Just give the old boy the best time you can and you will know if the time comes. Of course you can't blame him for being a bit snappy if he is feeling out of sorts and there are kids running round stopping him resting. My two constantly stand on my cats bad leg. I do too. Can't be helped as he lies in really silly places where you can't see him. Luckily he has never so much as scratched one of them or i would no doubt have a similar decision.
So did he come with the docked tail then? I can't believe people do that to dogs anymore. Poor boy.0 -
Pinky - we had the p.pool out too - me and DH were half in too - lovely.
Jo - thanks, he really is like a family member
Michelle - yes when we got him at 8 weeks his tail was already docked. He was in a terrible state when we took him, he was the last one left and had a heart problem, fleas in his ears, all sorts. We brought him as no way we could've ;eft him and reported the 'breeder' to the RSPCA.
Well terrible morning. Made appointment to take dog back to vets today as he was poorly this morning, got in from school run to find blood everywhere. So mad dash to vets who were amazing and got us straight in. He's having the op today to have the lump and tail off, however it doesn't look good. They are doing blood work first to see if its worth putting him through the op as they think he could be very poorly. Just waiting for a call to tell me whats going to happen and then either the op or back to discuss what happens next.

Just a very quick one but wanted to say thanks for the thoughts today xx
Doggie is back home - yipee!!!! So pleased, the bloods went through no problems and the vet is actually really hopeful it could all be from the tail being docked. He said he had never seen anything like it once it was shaved and he was able to have a good look at it. Grim. The tip of his tail has been removed and just a case of healing - fingers crossed it all goes okay now. Will get test results in a week of the bits that been removed but for now, things look okay. The level of care has been amazing too, think I might need to stretch my food budget for a tin of chocolates for them all.
I am so pleased. My hearts been in my mouth all day.
The bill was HORRENDOUS!!! But not worrying about that tonight, my boys ok. xxTrying to do one positive thing (however how small) per day to be mortgage free/reduced and be frugal but still enjoy life!Debt LBM Feb 2010 = £7841.97/ now £0, MFW 2011 = £9k in savings
