then you have the opportunity to use that money to pay off your debts and have a clean slate perhaps? without knowing the size of you debts it's difficult to say but 6000 Should be most of it? if not make a big dent? Also if you do have a bit of debt left over with the 500 a month you were saving you should be able to knock it on the head very quickly (plus the amounts you were paying to the debts that will now be paid off) and you may be able to get some good balance transfer deals when some of the debt is clear so that any remaining debt is at the lowest possible interst rate.
Good Luck

Thanks for that. Yes I know Martin advocates putting savings towards debt but I won't pretend it wouldn't irk me a bit to pay off that huge chunk of my car
I'm one of these people that likes the safety net of the savings and while this trip is definitely not looking likely I still have my heart set on a slightly bigger trip next year that would require more savings.
I'd really like to trade in the car for a cheaper model but at the moment the finance outstanding is higher than the value of the car...0 -

I agree with you about the savings, I have debts but really, really need the security (??) of having a little savings and I do mean a little, there for an emergency, I know Martin wouldn't agree but I can't get my head around doing anything different than that.
as far as cutting back on food honestly try the old time threads they are brilliant for cutting back, absolutely brilliant !!!
Good luck
