Hi, does anyone work for these companies and if so do you get plenty of work from them, enough to earn a decent enough living from them alone without having to have a day job as well?

I have worked for the Transcription Agency in the past. If you want to rely on transcription wages you need to register with two or three agencies at least because one agency alone cannot guarantee you a regular income.0

I have never worked for the Transcription Agency, however I have worked for another transcription company and can tell you that the work comes in peaks and troughs so it is very irregular work, and no work is ever guaranteed.
You will definitely need to register with probably three or four different companies, as the previous poster says, if you want enough work to live off.
Have you done transcribing before? I can be very frustrating work and the pay usually isn't that great. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I repeat what others have said- it's not a reliable income at all. Having worked for a similar company it is very unpredictable and I found myself wasting time just constantly checking emails for work that would have come in to try to get it before anyone else.0

Thanks for that. Both the agencies quote that they offer medical, hmrc, court service and legal transcription. Knowing how security conscious and fussy these public departments are about customer records I really can't imagine they would out source transcription work. Private doctors and research companies are a different matter of course.
Has anyone done any of the above work for either of the agencies or has it mainly been market research interviews and ordinary business transcription.
I have done transcription before but not for some time.0 -
I have done medical reports and police interviews. There is a wide variety of work and each agency will lean more towards one type of work than another.0

The way the NHS get round the customer records going outsourced is the paperwork stays in the actual hospital.
The Consultant dictates the patient's hospital identification number and date of birth of the patient and the clinic date. That way the letter is typed without an outsouce typist having knowledge of the name of the patient.
When sent back over the internet to the hospital for the letter to be printed the letter is tied up with their database so it can be copied or cut and pasted into the patient's records, then printed off for signing.
Identification numbers and dates of birth are used in NHS and private healthcare. I would imagine other orgnaisations follow the same protocol.
Having said that very strict encryption is also used to make sure no-one hacks in who is not authorised. I think I have read that paperwork of patients have been sent abroad but I really don't see why that is needed. For instance if any information is not clear from the dictation, a note can be made to the secretary in the hospital to fill in details of the reports of tests etc.
Paperwork should stay where it is, internet security should be well encrypted and identification numbers or file numbers and date of birth of client or patient should be sufficient.0
