Maybe this is in the wrong place, but i wondered if someone knew the answer.
I bought a cheap DVD player in Tesco December time. Remarkably i found the reciept in my trusty shoe box. This week the tray is refusing the open, so even though it was only £20 it should last longer than that right? Can i ask for a refund, or can they insist they have it repaired?

They'll probably just swap it for a new one. You can ask for a refund though. Depends on their mood.0

Technically, if it's faulty you can ask for a refund.
If not, then the least they can give you is a replacement (a brand new machine). As it's a laser product, you are legally allowed to demand a new machine rather than a repaired one.
My signature was so out of date and I can't think of a new one!0 -
I never knew that about laser products, but it's handy to know. You have info on where that is stated in retail law, just in case i need to refer a shop assistant to it at some time in the future..
thanks0 -
Bearing in mind that some Tesco CS desk staff are absolutely horrible and others very helpful, I would try to get a refund or replacement at a large store and, if you get a 'jobsworth' on the desk just try another Tesco.
You don't have to take it back to the same branch you bought it from.
I'm thinking of my 2 nearest Tesco stores and I know which one I would take a faulty item back to! The other store, no chance!!!PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

if it's cost £20 they won't get it repaired...it'll be replaced0

there should be an 0800 number on your receipt which you should call first. i didn't, just took my old dvd player to customer services paid an extra £4 for a better machine and hey presto another 12 months guarantee. You cant take the trousers off an elephant!0

There's usually a sign just behind the CS desk - have a read to see what it says, I'm sure there's something on there about problems with products.0

I've exchanged computers and big tv's on customer services (I work there), never sent anything back to be repaired, certainly wouldn't send a £20 dvd player to be repaired.
How long ago did you buy it? If it's longer than 30 days, I'd probably offer you an exchange first (as I'm supposed to) but as it's faulty if you really wanted a refund I'd do that. They're a bit funny about giving refunds on electrical products or dvds/cd's. At worst, you'll get an exchange.0 -

You are not entitled to a refund in these circumstances as he has had the goods for some months, and because its a laser machine what bit of legislation means you are allowed to demand a new machine.0 -
I thought all electrical items have a one year warranty against faults?Out of my mind. Back in 5 minutes.0
