Opening a Basic Bank Account

Hi,
The CCCS advised me to get a Basic Bank Account. Can anyone tell me how to do this when the NatWest Bank said they couldn't open one without me having a passport, driving license, benefits letter or book, pension letter, or bus pass? I took with me loads of what I thought would be ok - birth certificate, marriage certificate, rent card, council tax card, phone bill, medical card, hospital appointment card, blood test form, even my chemotherapy info. Was that enough - no way.  We are in debt, but have we got to get passports or driving licenses that we don't need costing money we can ill afford) just to get a bank account?

Hope someone out there has a brainwave; we are getting desperate!

Many thanks for your awaited response.

    Hi there :)

You can apply to open the Natwest Solo account online they just send you the paperwork to sign.
    Hope that helps

  • Hi,

Thanks for replying. Can't see NatWest Solo Account mentioned on website. I applied for an account on there. Can't remember what sort of one I applied for, but I had trouble doing that. Correspondence got lost in the post and they ended up cancelling my application because I hadn't replied.

Did you apply for the NatWest Solo Account - if so when because rules may have been changed. I felt so small because I didn't have what they wanted.

I seriously need help with this because CCCS won't start our Debt Management Plan until we change bank accounts.

    Please help someone!

    Many thanks,

Sorry I was having a blonde moment - the account is called Step and you get a Solo cash card with it.

I just signed up online, the letter took a few days to come through, I signed it and sent it back and the confirmation and card took another 3 or 4 days :)

    Hope that helps.

P.S I think the other place that you could try is the Co-operative bank, but I don't think they have the facility to sign up online although I think you can by telephone.

I opened my Alliance and Leicester one online without sending them any proof at all!

It does make me wonder though...
