Anyone making their own cake toppers?

I'm generally creative, and at the moment have time to kill waiting on a knee op, so I'm tempted to do this, although I don't know how much I'd really be saving compared to what they go for on ebay. Has anyone done this (and have piccies to share?) Does anyone have a guide on how to make them?
