Spymonkey - Cooped
Article by Paul Gallagher
Opening their show with a hilarious deadpan address to the audience, comedy quartet Spymonkey quickly establish that they are serious about being funny. With each performance precisely played and every punchline timed to perfection, it’s clear that they work hard to appear this off-the-cuff. And it is hard work that pays off, providing the audience with a superbly Pythonesque treat where almost every joke hits the mark.
The plot, such as it is, revolves around the secluded home of Forbes Murdston in Northumberlandshirehampton, where Laura Du Lay arrives to begin her new job as Murdston’s secretary. But little does she know that the house holds a terrible secret. Taking the fertile ground of the pulp gothic novella as a starting point, Spymonkey manage to inject the story with all manner of comedic insanity, from Laura’s ’condition’ where her body goes completely rigid without warning (leading to some hilarious physical comedy), to a couple of inspired musical numbers, complete with gloriously un-ironic dance routines.
Throughout the show, the actors continually break down the barrier between their characters and the audience, and the wonderful thing is that this, too, is part of the show. For all its self-aware thrown-togetherness, the play is meticulously assembled, with all four performers working one hundred percent, whether onstage delivering a deadly serious monologue or behind the scenes shaking a tree-branch menacingly, to sustain Cooped’s fully realised and totally insane world.
Spymonkey – Cooped, Assembly Ballroom, George St, 5.20pm, until August 28
