SE Tax help please

I am registered as SE and have been SE previously, so the normal tax stuff I'm pretty okay with. But this time I'm also working as a volunteer. I've just been filling out my expenses forms and it dawned on me that I might have to run these expenses through the books too.
If I do how do I go about it. It's only for petrol at 40p a mile, so do I just invoice myself then put the payment through when I receive my expenses?

Moving onto a better place...Ciao

I'm not sure I've understood this, so I'll say what I think is the case.
If you're claiming mileage for work done as a volunteer, that's got absolutely diddly squat to do with your self employment. You claim it, and put it in the bank. If you have a separate bank account for your self employment, your volunteer mileage goes into your personal account. If you only have one bank account, you need to be able to clearly identify what is personal and what is not.
Now, if your self employment and your volunteering are at the same place, it could be more complicated although I stand by what I said above, as long as the two can be clearly separated.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
As Sue says, the volunteering expenses are personal income and should not be declared. Keep a paper trail of where these expenses have come from in case you are investigated.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

Thanks both, I wasn't sure whether the expenses from the volunteer work would be classed as income.Moving onto a better place...Ciao :wave:0

Not if it's a straight reimbursement. If the organisation pays a lunch allowance over the odds, or pays for something which isn't strictly necessary, then it all becomes more complicated, but if your situation is simple, keep it that way ...Thanks both, I wasn't sure whether the expenses from the volunteer work would be classed as income.
Says the woman who's just realised some of our staff expenses probably need to go onto the P11D ... :eek:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
