What are Black Beans?

...only I need some for my recipe & they don't sell them in my Morrison's - is there another name for them or can I use something else?

It will depend on the recipe that you're using them for but pinto beans would be similar, however, they won't add the rich colour to the dish that black beans will.

Although they are bigger i would use red kidney beans instead. Pinto beans or haricot beans are about the same size but the wrong colour, if that's important to you! I pretty much interchange the beans in a recipe for what I've got in the cupboard. It seems to me that, with the honourable exception of chick peas and dried peas, they all taste more or less the same.

Thanks guys - it's for an American (Wild Rice Meatball) chilli recipe so I've opted for kidney beans

i think they are called turtle beans. there is an organic brand that sells black beans in a tin (brand starts with an 'e') or you can get them dry. try typing in turtle beans at tesco online. HTH.

I get black beans in the Caribeean section of our local Tesco.

I do live in Central London so its very diverse around here.

I have only ever found them in Sainsbury, they are in organic cartons of beans rather than the ordinary tins. If I want to use them, I make a special trip as they are really silky and lovely. You could use kidney beans if you must, though
