I'd read the t's and c's of your contract, most contracts have a minimum term which you have to pay unless you die! Its almost easier getting out of a straight jacket then cutting this short, but read the contract and see if there are any get out clauses such as pregnancy or similar.

I was at LAFitness last year, I went to cancel and they told me at the desk they do not allow you to cancel with the sales team and and gave me the membership team head office phone number, I do not have this anymore so you'd need to go to your gyms service desk for this.

They gave me a reference number and I was no longer charged- this was after a 12 month contract though and I had 'issues' with their gyms and cleanliness so when asked why was able to fill 5 minutes of complaining very easily- no one talked me into staying, though I had to give them 4 weeks notice to act on the cancellation so had a further 4 weeks to attend the gym after cancelling- I don't think you can get out of that bit.

If you need to note to cancel the membership then its classified as a document. Do not fake any official documents- you could get yourself into a whole load of trouble- classed as fraud!

Why not just get your GP to write you a note if your pregnant?

i used to work in membership for la, i remember they would let you defer your membership for pregnancy but to cancel alltogether you would need a letter from doc stating that you are medically unfit to exercise, they would also let you pay a reduced amount to leave but how much you would have to pay would depend on circumstances and how long is left on membership

thanks coco, even for deferral they want you to pay 13 quid a month, i dont really want to go there though cos its a smelly and dirty
  • Good luck, they arent the most helpful company, in fact they're the worst gym company i have ever had the misfortune of being associated with!!

Unless you're dead, dying or jobless, you cant get out of your contract and the best part is no-one wants to help you!

You're only hope is to get a doctors letter stating you're incapacitated and unable to use the gym in any way and ensure it covers you for a period that will pass the expiry date on your contract. Oherwise they will simply expect you to resume your contract after a period of time.

LA Fitness are militant in hunting you down for money. I've been going through a series of tests in hospital for the last 5 weeks to see if I have cancer and they are still determined that I should conclude my contract! Now that's what i call "Member Relations"

    Good luck!!
  • Gyms do not like bad publicity. Write them a stern but polite letter stating you have not received the service they promised and have not enjoyed your time with them. Say you're considering collecting together a folder of like-minded people you know, who also consider them to be bad, and sending it to the local paper titled: 'Unsympathetic gyms and their nasty contracts' which will name them. Be careful not to libel them by hurling insults and saying things you can't prove though. If you have a genuine claim to get out of the contract, such as pregnancy, it wouldn't stand up in court if they tried to enforce it (how can you tell whether you will be fit for the gym ever again!) If you don't have a physical reason but merely don't like the place then pile on the reasons why they haven't gven you the service you expected and that you are going to tell everyone you know to avoid the place.
You may have to endure some letters but it's always worth fighting your corner. Too many gyms get people to sign one-sided contracts (you promise to pay them every month but what do they promise in return?) Look for a pay-as-you-go gym and avoid these forced contracts like the plague. After all, would you sign a one-sided contract to shop at your local supermarket? Of course not! Hope this helps...

I managed to cancel with LA Fitness fine, just called the number they gave me at the desk, complained when they asked me why I wanted to leave (mould issues) they didn't press me to rejoin and gave me a reference number, no further cash taken from my account. It can be done!
