I don't know why we can't have variable limits like in France which are dependant on the weather and like one of the other OPs said time of day.
20mph outside a school in school hours is fast enough but when they've all gone home up the limit. Similarly 70mph on a motorway in fog or driving rain is too fast but 85mph on a clear day is no problem.
I'm not anti-speed cameras (and I live in the land of PC Brunstrom the speed camera king) but I think we need more actual traffic police to catch the dangerous drivers like the one that undertook then wove in and out of me and several other drivers over double white lines on a horrendously bendy road last Sunday whilst using his mobile!!!
;) If you think you are too small to make a difference, try getting in bed with a mosquito!

One of the main reasons I'm against speed cameras is that honest motorists are the only ones caught and punished.

When dishonest motorists (i.e. the criminal element) get flashed by a camera, they get away totally scot free if:

    1. They are displaying false number plates, or:
    2. They are driving a stolen vehicle, or:
    3. They have failed to register themselves as keeper of the vehicle with the DVLA.

And by the government's own admission there are hundreds of thousands of vehicles that fall into the categories above.

You could even argue that the current system of putting machines in charge of policing the roads actually encourages criminals to display false plates and/or fail to register themselves as the vehicle's keeper.

I'm all in favour of making the roads safer by rooting out the dangerous drivers, but I'm convinced that the only way of achieving this is with intelligent human policing.

Because it isn't a revenue generator.

I agree 100%. Having been recently hit head on by a driver overtaking on a blind bend which knocked me off the road and caused almost £1000 worth of damage to my own vehicle Angry doesn't even come close!. The other driver didn't even stop and do you think that the police have traced and apprehended the person responsible?. No!, they have shown little interest and he or she is still driving around safe in the knowledge that they have got away with it.

    Hiya,
I recently recieved 'Notice of Intended Prosecution' for ALLEGEDLY exceeding the speed limit (35 mph in a 30mph zone) - but can anyone provide any insights as to whether aspects of the notice, as indicated below, are inappropriate, insufficient or peculiar to the point where it is not possible to be sufficiently certain that I am responsible for any such contravention ?

    a) LOCATION: Firstly, the Notice only indicates the name of the very long major road where ALLEGEDLY the violation occured. It does not give an address, camera number or any other specific location. So how can I know if I went by that camera or if the camera is appropriately signposted and visible if they dont say where the camera is?

    b) PHOTO: The Police notice contends that photographic evidence will be supplied to the court, but they do not give me a copy of any such photo. In America, for example, the photographs are provided with the notice by mail so the person can see their car at the location of the contravention, to avoid doubt. In this case, if I can't see a photo of the car how can I even be sure that my number plates were not duplicated or any other circumstances that might be relevant and evident from a photo, or even whether such photo evidence exists at all? Doesn't any 'defendant' have the right to examine claims and evidence againt them before court so they can address it in court?

    c) POINTS: In any event, what happens if a penalty were to be somehow granted when the driver has a non-UK drivers license? DVLA can't put points onto a foreign license can they?

    D) The notice is accompanied by a form that the owner of the car is required to return; but as per issues A) and B) above, the form cannot be completed with confidence so what should be done?

pepipoo.com for useful advice, along with speedtrap bible. They have to supply photos if they are available - they might try it on "we won't supply unless you're taking it to court" etc, but they must supply then, so don't give in.

I'll put my hands up and say that I, alongside EVERY OTHER DRIVER on my way journey home tonight broke the speed limit at least once - exactly the same as every other day.

& guess what ? no carnage, no death, no accidents, no near misses, just a regular drive home.

Ok so this will solicit some comments!!,Speeding doesnt kill, poor driver standards do, statistics prove that more are injured or killed by vehicles travelling within the posted limit.
When Gatso's 1st came out they were in 'Accident Blackspots' and then they became Revenue Generators, i do enjoy driving fast, WHERE AND WHEN SAFE!!, No i'm not some boy racer, have passed my advance drivers test and GEMS and not had 1 collision in 10 years.
  • I believe most forces will only produce calibration certs if you go to court and pled NG. And then you might still have to fight for them.

Best method to not get caught speeding, as posted many times in a santimonious manner - don't speed.
Second best - use the time wisely. Wait 20 days and ask for photos to identify the driver (they'll tell you they're to identify the car). Wait for the reminder and send a PACE letter (see PePiPoo). Cross fingers for another 4 months or so ;)
In the United Kingdom 200,000 people are bitten by dogs every year and some people will die as a result. Of those bitten, 70% are children... So the question has to be asked....... Has the time come to ban children?

travelling at exactly 30 outside a school at start/end time in heavy rain is much more dangenous than driving past the same school at 35 in the middle of a clear night - one could get you points on your licence, the other wouldn't...please can the pedants accept that as in everyhting in life their is room for personal responsibility and judgement rather than just moralising

Errr, A bit of Déjà Vu going on 'ere methinks, I've seen this exact post before and replied to it but the date 16 Aug 2006 is certainly not right!

Anyway, I don't know if it was "michaels" who posted this before or not but I'll give the same reply I gave all those months ago......

If you do 30 outside school gates at 3pm in the rain, you are liable to get a ticket for careless driving or driving with undue care..... The reason is that you have to drive safely for the conditions. The speed limit is a maximum but it does not mean that you *have* to drive at the limit. People have been done for undue when under the speed limit.
