  • Hi Andy,

What are your nearest towns? I used to work in recruitment so I'm pretty good at finding evening jobs/part time work that is being advertised.

I reclaimed all my charges from HSBC & Barclaycard quite easily using the letter templates on here.

Firstly I would send of the 'subject access request' letter. Basically asking for copies of your statements over the last 6 years. Some banks try to charge you for each new copy of statements but the most they can legally charge you is a one off fee of £10 per bank (you can send the cheque along with the letter to save time)

Once you get your stack of statements back, sit down with a highlighter and start marking off all the overlimit charges and overlimit fees. Then make a new list showing the dates and reasons for the charge and the charge amount. Include the total at the bottom.

The more accurate and organised you are, the quicker they respond. You're more likely to get a letter fobbing you off if you don't include a comprehensive list with dates etc.

They usually reply back with a standard letter saying 'we believe our charges are fair', then you reply back with a further letter saying they are compounding your financial difficulty and say if they don't respond you will contact the Financial Ombudsman.

This is the point where I got my charges back. However I know some banks are harder to deal with, they may require a few more letters.

It is SO worth it though, to see all the charges being returned to your accounts!!!! :D

Have you done your SOA (incomings/outgoings) yet? This will help you to see if you are moving in the right direction and what to pay off first!

would i have to highlight the charge, and also highlight the point where i went overdrawn ?
