Will overseas debt count against me?

My whole adult life I have never been in debt. I have always, always paid every bill on time and would go without rather than incur any debt. I've had credit cards and always paid the bill as soon as it arrived, never incurring any interest.
Recently I spent quite a few years living in America and fell on really hard times. Had no work and my end looked imminent. In desperation, I allowed myself to be persuaded to get involved in some really dodgy investments which ended up in me defaulting on some debts. I've been back in the UK now for a year and a half, presently staying with family and am now ready to rent a flat. I wondered if there's any likelihood of being denied on the grounds of the default in the US.

You should probably cancel the holiday to Disney world next year though, Mickey mouse will drag you off in hand cuffs and lock you in the Magic Castle for ten years.
