Wescot Passed on my Debt??

I have owed a few hundred pounds to BT as I moved out my flat over a year ago and cancelled my contract. BT passed on my debt to Wescot debt collectors. I set up a direct debit for the right amount of months to pay it all off within a year. I have so far paid 2 months and got a letter recently saying I shouldnt pay Wescot anymore and that my debt has been passed on and I should stop paying them. This is the only letter I have had. So this morning I phoned Wescot and they said that this was true and that it had been passed back to BT so I have no reason to contact or pay Wescot anymore. So I called BT. The woman said that I owe nothing to BT. There is no outstanding balance against my name what so ever. So I checked on my online account with BT, and she was right, balance is £0.00.
This is great news for me, in fact, it sounds too good to be true!
Wescot have stopped my direct debit to them. So now I am paying nothing. Great! But.. I'm worried that some how, this will come bite me on the bum soon. Where do I stand legally?
Can anyone help me please?!?!

Hi
You may well find that a different debt collector will be in touch soon. If they do then you'll need to arrange payment to them.
By the way, its not advised to set up a direct debit to a DCA (as they have been known to take out more than you agree), always best to do it by standing order.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Chances are BT are still the legal owners of the debt, and have decided to get another company to collect on this debt, who should be in touch shortly.0

Thanks very much. I knew it would be too good to be true!

I heard that you can get out of paying debt collectors.
I have been doing a little research online on "Wescot" and the majority of the searches have come up with "do NOT pay wescot anything".
I only owe them under £300 which BT sold onto them. Can I get out of paying this at all?0 -
Can I get out of paying this at all?
Why should you?
You do owe it don't you?

I think it would be hard to get out of this as 1 you have paid them recently and 2 its a BT contract which is a service agreement (rather than a credit agreement).
You may well be able to negotiate a reduced settlement if you could afford to pay it in one lump sum (eg if you could raise £100 they may agree to settle for this - if you do then you need to do it all in writing using a proper template letter).A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0
