Paying correct tax?
Comments
-
Yes I was employed previously from Apr to Nov the last tax year.
How do I go about claiming any tax back? And how would I know how much to claim?
And what is the correct figure to calculate the tax on? £25,000/annum or £1,900/month?
And thanks for your help, i'm useless at these things.
The correct figure is your earnings in the tax year concerned - actual for last year, based on current pay rate for this year. If that's £25000 as far as you can tell then that's £2083 a month
Claim from your tax office - your employer will tell you which one he deals with. You don't have to claim a particular amount - the tax office will work it out for you.
What happened to the P45 from your previous job - the April November one? If you gave it to your current employer try to get it back - it will speed up the refund. And did you get JSA in between? that will make a difference.0 -
Thanks.
I'm going to sound very thick now so forgive me for the next set of questions.
I thought the amount paid to me per month before deductions would be dependent upon how much I earn not on anything previously earned. I.E I'm now earning 25k so I should be recieving 25k/12 per month?
I also thought that any tax applied would only be based on the tax year 2010/2011 and not with any other periods??
I was on JSE in the interim period.
My wage in the last year was higher than this-I was a contractor but it worked out to be approx 33k per annum, but in the last tax year I worked from Apri to Nov.
Regarding the P45, I have that at home, I didn't realise I had to pass it on to this employer.0 -
your gross pay is something to sort out with your employer and how the yearly figure is pro-rataed is likewise somthing to discuss with your employer
the tax is dependent upon when you are actually paid and not the start of the contract; so if you have only received payments with this employment after 6th April, then once you sort out the tax code then your tax will automatically sort itself out and you tax will be correct.
for last tax year it rather depends.... if you post up your total income (including JSA) and your total tax and the date of your P45 we will be able to work out if it is correct.0 -
thanks guys. You have been very kind and patient.
It will take me a while to check my total earnings for last year because beforehand I was paid weekly and it was per hour so each week was different.
Is it for work performed in the period Apr 1st to March 31st? Or payments recieved?
regarding this problem the head of the payroll team said the reason why it is less than 25,000/12 is because I'm being paid four weekly, so I think that then works out right.0 -
your income for tax purposes is that when the money is received.... you should find the totals on your P45
good that the gross has been sorted.0 -
can I ask how JSA is dealt with? Do I just tell them the amount I received or do they want say a bank print out?
I got £3123.73 for April to May 2009 from previous job (payslip - tax month 2) then £1423.79 JSA (bank statement) and then £3296.65 from my current job (payslip W52).0 -
You should have a p45 like form from the JSA people.
Regarding the P45, I have that at home, I didn't realise I had to pass it on to this employer
Jeez that's what it's FOR. It says so on it. Though to be fair given when you started he might not have been able to process it in time. And the JSA would still have complicated the issue. (they don't deduct tax but it's taxable)0 -
Hi.
I would just like to say thank you to everyone on this thread.
For the JSA-I recieved a seperate P45 for that.
Yes I know, I'm a bit ignorant on these matters. I have only had one long term job before this one, so I didn't know about it. Must sound silly, but I know for next time
the payments person has told me that it will now be processed and I should be on the correct tax code for the next payment period. He also said that any excess tax paid will be automatically re-paid to me on my next pay cheque. Is that right though? Or do I have to contact HMRC to do this?0 -

For the current tax year that is correct.
Getting any tax back from last year (if due) is a different issue. You will need to contact HMRC for that.0 -
Ok, on my P45 it said I earned £21,447.05 and paid £3417 pounds in tax.
Do you think there is anything to claim on that?0
