default against my name even though paying

hi all this is my first posting in this section of mse and i need some help and or advice please.
i have recently requested and received my final bill from ntl, when i received the final bill i rang them to try to make an arrangement to pay but they would not accept it and said it would be sent to a debt collector.
since this conversation with them i have made payment when i could, after doing this my bill was down to £80 so i rang to make a payment of £40 leaving me with £40 to pay.
i rang to make this payment for £40 and at that time asked if i would be able to make an arrangement to pay for the final £40 as at this time they still had my account and it had not been passed to the debt collectors, the man i spoke to said yes and i arranged to pay £20 due to be paid tomorrow 10/5 and the final £20 2 weeks after, i double checked that this was an arrangement to pay and it was in place and there would be no further action taken if i stuck to this and he said that was right.
last week i receive a call from a debt collection agency telling me i owe them £40 and ther is now a default notice on my credit file, i have not defaulted and now this is on my credit file and i dont know what to do about this.
any help would be greatly appreciated, tankyou in advance for your help, gina

NTL(Virgin Media) are still obliged under contractual law to send you out a default notice to your address if they were going to place one. None the less if have missed 3 payments they are allowed to place one on your account in accordance with the terms and conditions.
Personally i would not list to the debt collector (DCA) and instead get back in touch with NTL(Virgin Media) saying you have already agreed payments and the balance is down to £20 but a DCA is now demanding £40 and has stated a default has been added. This default must have been added by yourselves which is breaking the verbal agreement i already had to pay of the account arrears.
it is possible the DCA is lying about the default although generally a default is placed when an account is passed to a DCA.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies0
