Picking the growers brains here.
When can I expect the maris pipers in season again, they were so cheap at £4 a 12kg bag and lasted 2 - 3 weeks.
Spending a fortune on the supermarket tatties.
Google tells me it's an all year crop...
Advice and education appreciated

FrugalJo - I don't know when they will be in the supermarkets but they are ready at our local pyo farm. Went there on Monday and dug shallots, carrots and picked cabbage and runner beans - completely forgot the taters, even though we walked right past them!

Soon, I think. I'm buying maincrop spuds from the farmshop now;) £4 for 12 kg sounds quite expensive to me. I get 25kg bags for the same price. I usually get Marfona which can be huge and are brilliant bakers.0

Sorry to go ot but:
thriftlady - I see you live in Worcester, can I ask which farmshops you use? We were at Bells pyo on Monday. I like Broomfields but a bit pricey on some things. Any recommendations? We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.

I'm afraid Broomfields is my regular haunt. I don't find it particularly expensive and their apples are cheap . They have their own again now- Discovery for £1.40 for 4 lbs, as the other apples come in they stay around that price throughout Autumn and Winter.
I get my spuds from Gwillams on the Ombersley Road, but I find them not so good for tree fruit.
I have picked up bargains in the form of large trays of fruit & veg from both these shops. For instance I bought a 10 lb box of broad beans for £4 from Gwillams when they were selling them loose for 99p a lb and I got a tray of 11 lbs of strawbs for £10 which was much cheaper than their little punnets.
Another one I use is Roots of Rushwick, completely the other side of Worcester. This is mainly organic I think and a lot more expensive than Broomfields but very nice and friendly. They also have their own meat and do lamb boxes which look good value. They tend to have more unusual things too, like mixed summer squash for example.
I don't know Bells I'm afraid, where is it?

Probably too far out for you then, they have two sites, one near Stourport on Severn and one at Little Witley.
I wonder if we have passed each other some time at Broomfields!!! I was there on Saturday getting Greengages, Damsons, strawberries (from Witley) and their first apples.

Only have one farmshop locally
But you know I live in glorious Dorset and I really should search for different outlets.
Maris Piper just do perfect roasts and HM oven chips, be honest I' ve not given any other spud a chance .

FrugalJo - around here (v rural Shropshire/Worcs) you can drive by farms with hand written signs saying potatoes for sale, and then buy them from the farmhouse. Perhaps they do the same in Dorset?
regards
