I'm thinking of buying, say, 1/4 pig or something (I have a big freezer.)...has anyone done this? Would you recommend it?

I have bought some pretty large pieces of meat before and just "butchered" them at home.
Can be a bit time consuming but you do then tend to see what you are getting, and it is usually better value. If you don't intend to use all of it, it can be a bit of a luxury though. We all evolve - get on with it0 -
hiya
Ive never done it, but often thought of doing it, I know it's common practice in places like Greece, seems a good idea if you've got the space to store it and probably a good butcher to give you advice.

I'd definitely recommend it. I bought half a lamb earlier this year and pound for pound it worked out much cheaper than if I'd bought the cuts from the butcher. I would definitely go for it again. I can't recommend my supplier to you as I live in N Ireland, but I imagine you would get much the same quality and value in England.

My Q Guild butcher sells whole pigs and lambs as well as halves. He also sells a foreqaurter and hindquarter of beef (about 135lb of meat) and 'whole tops' of beef. Prices vary but the pork works out at about £45 fo a half pig too.0

I have a new freezer coming and I want to fill it with Meat.Whats the best way to go about it.Should I fill it with Supermarket Meat or visit the local Farm Shop or a butcher.I'd like to get good value for money and have contacted my local farm shop and they are asking £45 for 1/2 a lamb. Its been a while since I bought meat in bulk so I'm not sure if this cheap or not
