Hi
If she admits/acknowledges the debt in writing she would restart the 6year period for statute barred debts.
Are you certain this is about the same debt?
She could ignore this letter, or possibly send a prove it letter to them (although that might be hard if they haven't given any info of the debt). But that said it might be hard to ignore them for a whole year.
Has she had a copy of her credit file recently? might be worth getting this to see if it appears, whether there is a default and what sort of amount of money they might be after (as if there is a default it might be worth offering a reduced amount to clear the debt if they will also agree to remove the default).A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Sounds like it was her debt to deal with but if it was that long ago and for a relatively small amount I can't see them pursuing it. I would say write a carefully worded letter (not admitting ownership of the debt) asking for proof it is hers. And checking her credit file is definitely a good idea if she hasn't done so already.0

Yes that's the credit file. I'm not an expert (sure someone will correct me!) but I understand that it should show as a default or something like that, wouldn't necessarily give full details like the amount....should be dated though. Anyone know better, please feel free to correct me!
Sounds like you really need to get more info to be sure that this debt is in fact a Virgin debt and not something else. A recorded letter admitting nothing but asking for proof would be your best bet, but that's good news that nothing is obviously flagging up in the red on the credit report!0 -
credit expert is only 1 of the 3 - experian and equifax too.Debt at highest: £8k. Debt Free 31/12/2009. Original MFD May 2036, MF Dec 2018.0

If this is the first letter and lists no info as to the amount of debt/account number etc then i would just wait. Chances are they'll send another letter with more information within a month or so and then depending on what that says we'll advise.
That is what we meant about checking the file and that does sound fairly promising. Its likely if it had appeared it would either show as credit account virgin, default date 5years ago, balance owed £100 (or whatever) or it might have showed as credit account - 'evil debt collection agency', default date 5years ago etc etc.
The only thing I would say (and just to cover every angle) is sometimes a debt will disappear briefly when the debt is sold on, ie virgin remove their info and before the DCA enter their info, so it is something to watch out for.
If they can prove the debt at some point I would imagine she could come to a settlement deal with them. Obviously don't know her circumstances but if its possible might be an idea to try to save a little bit of money over the next month or so incase she does need to come to an agreement (more likely to get a discount if you can pay in one go).A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
credit expert is experian. The next one to check would be equifax and finally she could check call credit (the third agency but the least used). (You can get each report for £2 if you chose the statutory postal report).A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0
