it used to be that you could defer at any time, but they could only backdate it for three months. So if you were due to start paying in July, but sent the forms in in September and it took a month to process, you'd be deferred from August ish. (old style pre 2002?3? loans)

If anyone can find any regulations governing the SSLC, I'd love to see it, as they seem to change rules as they want, and won't give anything in writing, (so that they can tell you whatever when they phone you)
for more info check out www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk . You'll find me there.

Yeah, they've changed their minds about backdating, apparently. Gits.

    hiya,

i moved house this april wrote to SLC to tell them i moved and heard nothing since, i got a letter 2wks ago telling me as i hadnt deferred i now owe them money! I sorted them out quickly and blamed them, luckily my deferment only ended in july, and they said they could back date it 3 mths, so therefore i dont owe them any "arrears" now.

My SL was a right tedious pig of a debt. They were always writing to me for some reason or another. I'm glad I got shot of it years ago.
