Good quality sensitive Gluten Free dog food reasonably priced.
Recently tried Wagg complete Sensitive Chicken and rice dog food for our dog and found it to be excellent so far. Their dry dog food range contains no artifical colours of flavours and no wheat or wheat gluten. It can be hard to find in the shops though and is around £15 per 12 kg bag but our dog loves it and no problems with her. We used to use Pedigree until we read up on it's contents. Have also recommended Wagg Light & Senior dog food to people who visit our small Grooming parlour as others have found it to be excellent. It contains Glucosamine and Chondroitin. May be better to purchase the small 2 kg bag first though to make sure your dog likes it otherwise another wasted bag of dog chow! Pets at home sell Wagg but haven't seen the sensitive or the senior there. We have an account with a large pet wholesaler but haven't been able to locate it anywhere else yet. Will post if I do. Visit the Wagg website for more information on varieties and competition, advice etc. WAGG is a family run company since 1923 and are happy to offer advice on their dog food. Hope this helps...................;)

Sadly wagg is as bad as pedigree, here's an independent review of wagg complete sensitive from this site

    http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/
The main ingredients in this food are grains. Maize (corn) is a difficult to digest grain of limited value, and which is also commonly associated with food allergies in dogs. Rice and oats are better quality grains, but at 4% content, are really not significant enough to adjust the overall quality of the grain content. Even if the food were based on good quality grain, we would still note that grains are an unnatural foodstuff for canines. Dog foods should be based on meat.

The first meat ingredient is named meat meal, fourth on the ingredient list. It makes up only 4% of the food, which is woefully inadequate. The fifth ingredient is also a meat product, but this is a low quality meat product. "Meat" could be anything and ingredients of unidentifiable species and source are usually of very low quality.

The fat and oil content of the food is undisclosed and, as the meat ingredient above, is likely to be of very low quality. Beet pulp is controversial filler. It is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required.

The food has added vitamins and minerals, but no information about these is given and it may contain synthetics. Likewise, the preservative is undisclosed and may be chemical preservatives such as ethoxyquin, BHT and BHA which are allowed in pet products but are banned or heavily regulated in human food due to the belief that they are carcinogenic.

Overall, this is an extremely low quality product with barely enough meat for flavouring. It might be better fed to a rabbit than a canine.

I think the last paragraph says it all. I wouldn't feed this to my dogs if wagg paid me to. I really don't get why people do, why pay £15 for 12kg of this absolute crap when you can get skinners hypo allergenic duck and rice for £18 per 15kg sack, or plenty of CSJ feeds are cheaper than wagg..

The link in the first post takes me to Tesco, not Asda, is that correct?
  • With regard to Pedigree, I've heard that it is available universally due to the massive marketing budget and the fact it has bigger profit margins for the retailer than any other dog food - reportedly to the point where it isn't worth stores stocking own brands for some items. The quality rating appears shocking, but I guess something has to give?

If you go to Pets at Home, they will let you have one or two small sample packs of the better quality dog foods, if you ask. Understandably they don't advertise the fact, but you'll normally get enough dog food for a few days worth of feeds to check your dog is OK with the change.

I'm sure other good pet shops will offer something similar.

The website mentioned previously is currently down, but I'm keeping a note of it and will check what rating the food we're currently giving our dog gets now I know about it.

Almost all of the good brands will send you decent sized samples if you call them and ask. Save going to pets at home, especially since they only seem to stock hills, purina, jwb etc. None of which I'd call top quality. Their own weinwrights brand is by all accounts a great food, I've heard a lot of good thinks about it. Even their silver boxed own stuff has a decent meat content.
