Just back in from Nationwide, had an appointment to open a basic bank account etc..
Then he said he'd have to do a credit search even though it was a basic account.
I said NO!!!!!
Is this right? I left the branch feeling sorry for myself..
I'm now looking for one i can maybe apply for on-line. Can anyone help?

hunny i'd be inclined to think that all banks are gonna carry out some kind of credit search before opening an account. maybe try explaining the situation and hope for a sympathetic bank???0

By law, a bank has to do a credit check.
There are certain "know your customer" regulations that have to be followed to avoid money laundering and criminal activity. Not only the bank but the staff member can face legal charges if they do not take appropriate steps when opening accounts.
Can your employer help you get a bank account? Sometimes they have special arrangements with banks.0 -
I opened both a co op cashminder and a nat west step account over the telephone. They both accepted me, even though I owe an £1800 overdraft on my bank account with Abbey. I also have defaults on credit cards and loans.
They did do credit reference checks but explained that it was to do with preventing money laundering and fraud.0 -
If it's a basic account the credit search is more than likely only to be for security and identity purposes. You should have no real probem getting the most basic account from alot of banks. Don't quote me on that though!
