my sis in law wanted to do this but wearnt sure how much she would get for her 32" old fashioned tv0

Personally I think I would firstly find out how much trade in I would get with the TV I wanted, then find the cheapest place to get the TV I was after then find out if it did the trade-in. If it did not I would work out if that was cheaper than the cheapest with the trade in offer. If I then needed a TV to trade in I would be off down the dump to pick up a TV, or find one in the classifieds that would work out far less than the discount.
This scheme is simply a different was of discounting their TVs so if it worked out the cheapest way of getting the TV it would be worth a little effort. The trade-in price is connected to the TV you want to buy, not the one you want to trade in.What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
went to house of fraser on bank holiday monday to look for a sony bravia 40 inch.
price is now 699.00.
on monday it went to 629.00 and the sales bloke said if i bring any old tv, working or not, into the loading bay i could get a further 100.00 off according to his list tvs that are part of the promotion. so i agreed and purchased the sony kdl40w5810 for 529.00 . i took in a very old portable from the loft.
very pleased with deal.
just need a small crane now to shift my old crt from the living room.0 -
Got 37" sony with freeview and Freesat HD for £445 from tesco with the £100 off for my old (huge, heavy) 32" CRT (which only cost £110). So well pleased.0

Don't forget to try price matching at the "Sony Style" stores. I managed to get them to price match against a Sony accredited dealer within 15 miles and got another £100 off on top of the trade-in deal.
You need a printed copy of the offer at the other dealer, and the item you're after has to be in stock at the dealer you're price matching against. They don't price match against online merchants (e.g. Amazon).
Bartering saved me £100 and a 30 mile round trip :beer:0 -

So it doesn't matter what size, age or condition TV you take in to get the maximum off? That is what I read into your response.
So in theory you could pick up a cosmetically good TV from the dump and use that. Is that right?
Just goes to show how much of a mark up they price their goods at.
Bring us a load of old tat and we will knock £100 off the price! And dispose of your rubbish.
I wonder how happy retailers are about this. Getting dumped with a load of old bulky CRTs taking up space. Do Sony have a special team of Tat TV Takers?
I suspect they have done some shady deal with an (ex) Government member who has offered them massively reduced import and tax incentives.
It costs very little to export a container - not the same bringing it in!
I just can't see what the alternative benefits to Sony would be. They aren't going to be reusing the parts. They just end up with a load of bulky and useless waste to dispose of.
I wonder where the TVs are made and if they could dump them cheaply in that country....?
I am also intrigued as to how much these TVs actually cost to manufacture. Your TV was reduced almost 25% from £699 to £529 with very little effort it seems.
Presumably the retailer is still making a tidy profit after all overheads, storage, transport, staff, taxes, retail expenses. Sony are still making a tidy profit. I wouldn't be surprised if anything over £200 after everything could be classed as profit.
