Question RE flying to Scotland and Car Hire and Insurance

Hi peeps,

Am not sure if anyone will know, have posted in the travel section, but they scare me over there!!!!

WE are flying up to our Scotland Wedding a few days before the big day, and hiring a car. I am worried that what happens if the volcanic ash reappears (like it has today), and Glasgow Airport is forced to close.

I called Easycar (we have not booked yet) and the lady said we would have to claim on our travel insurance. Do I have to have travel insurance AS WELL AS wedding insurance?!?

Can anyone advise the best way to go about this as wedding insurance covers "cancellations" but does that include transport up there?

Thanks guys xxxx

I'd say first thing you need to do is contact your wedding insurance people to find out exactly what they will & wont cover.

where do you stay? could you not change the car hire to someplace nearer you and just drive up?
    Or take the train?
When I go to london, always find it much easier to get the train anyway, actually takes less time when you factor in check in etc.
You could take the train to glasgow then pick up your car there.

Where (which town) are you getting married? Are you flying into Glasgow international or Glasgow Prestwick? How many people are travelling? There are a few different options available to you. Have you seen the free family railcard that's on offer just now, that might be agood idea for a standby?

You will most likely need travel insurance as well as wedding insurance - most policys have a clause where they won't pay if it's reasonable to claim on a different policy (your car gets nicked with your dress inside - car insurance, or your house burns down with the cake inside - house insurance)

Thanks for your replies girlies :)

We are flying to Glasgow Int and getting married in Gretna, which is what, about a 2 hour drive?

I think with the train, it will be last minute if we cant fly and prices hike up closer to the departure date? Had a quick look anyway and they are currently running about £50 more expensive for me and fiance.

Car hire alternative is a good one, I think we will have to do that, even though it is loads more expensive down here!!!! So if push came to shove we can do that (so thanks as its a great idea!), and just pay the extra.

As for the FlyBe insurance - yes they may be cashing in, but for £6.99 I wouldnt care! If it meant we saved so much if plans were to be changed in a wedding and stressful situation I think it's great!! Am flying with Easyjet, so will see if they have jumped on the bandwagon.

So I have plan A, Plan B (flight ins), Plan C (Hire car change)!!!!!

Really is reassuring if the worst comes to the worst :)

Do Easycar offer cancellation insurance? Like what you can get if you book a train ticket?

I called Easycar and they said no it will have to be under travel insurance for volcanic ash. There is an insurance for cancellation, even then you have to cancel 48 hours before actual hire xxx
