Old car number plate

We have an old car number plate for a car we don't have any more - used to use it on the bike holder but failed to pass it on when we sold the car.

I was thinking of freecycling it or even offering it for sale at a table top sale I'm doing in a few days: it's a nice smooth bit of plastic, could be useful for all sorts of things (apart from illegal purposes, that is!)

But would that be breaking the law?

Do you just mean the plate itself or that you own the actual registration.

its always a bit awkward with license plates. when we had ours stolen   (why anyone would want one, never mind both  )

turns out it was a good job we reported it to the police - a few days later they were used in a petrol snatch and grab thingy

do you have a friendly neighbourhood bobby you could check with? or perhaps the dvla might be able to help?

It's the plate itself. We don't own the registration, and the car it goes with may not even still be on the road!

That's my worry, that it might end up in the 'wrong' hands. Don't ever see a policeman round here to speak to, can't face the DVLA. Could phone the garage where we've had them made up in the past (not for that car, you understand, but for subsequent cars) and see what they say.

You should destroy the plate. The DVLA specifically states you should destroy it, to prevent it being used fraudulently.

I now have no idea what I've done with it, but I think it ended up in the landfill bin ... :rotfl:
