If left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to critical conditions, such as heart disease, strokes, kidney and eye damage.
However, it can be easily treated by making a few changes to your lifestyle, such as exercise, losing weight or reducing the amount of salt in your diet.
[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]As you get older you’re more likely to have high blood pressure, but there are also lifestyle factors which can put you at a higher risk. If any of the following apply to you, it’s a good idea to visit our pharmacy for a free blood pressure test:[/FONT]
[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]• You have a family history of high blood pressure or heart disease[/FONT]
[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]• You're overweight[/FONT]
[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]• You don’t do much exercise[/FONT]
[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]• You're of Asian or Afro-Caribbean descent[/FONT]
[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]• You drink more than the recommended amount of alcohol (14* units per week for women, 21 units per week for men)[/FONT]
[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]• You have a diet that’s high in salt[/FONT]
[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]• You don’t eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day[/FONT]
[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]*A unit is equivalent to ½ pint of standard strength beer, a small glass of wine or a single measure of spirits.[/FONT]
If necessary, medication can be prescribed by your GP.
In most people there are no symptoms of high blood pressure at all, you may feel completely fine.
The only way to tell is to get tested. If you're at all concerned about your blood pressure then come in and see one of our pharmacy team for a free test and expert advice. No pressure.
