Will Tescos refund me in this scenario?
Teknophobia
Better half bought a chicken from Tescos on 30 April and went to cook it yesterday, only to find the sell by and use by date were 1st May. Would've expected Tesco to have put a 'Reduced' sticker on it being that it was so close to expiry.
I know I haven't any rights here, but all the same, should I try and get a refund from Tesco or not bother?
Any thoughts welcome!

I wouldn't bother.
Your OH made a mistake not looking at the date label (which I am sure we have all done), and Tesco didn't sell the Chicken after the sell by date.0 -
Agreed; in the bin it goes. Still trying to teach the OH not to pick anything up fresh without checking the date, but after 14 years, she's still doing it
I'm usually the one you'll see fishing at the back of a shelf trying to find a better date
Thanks for replying.0 -
Why bin it? - did it suddenly go rancid once midnight went by?0

If it still looked O.K. and didn't smell off then I would have still cooked it.
They must build in a % to cover themselves, but I reckon you could still use it with 24 hours after the use by date.0 -
The rule in my house is anything meat we will eat one day after its use by, anything else will get eaten as long as it looks, smells and tastes ok. Never poisoned anyone yet

I too would have cooked it .You can certainly smell if meat, especially chicken is off.Eat/Sell by doesn't mean will kill you the next day.At midnight it won't suddenly turn into a pumkin. No way would I have binned it unless it didn't pass the 'nose' test.0

I have a 'rule' too, it's if l was lost and starving and found a cabin with the out of date item in a fridge/cupboard there, would l cook and eat it regardless? :rotfl:
I've eaten everything past it's sell by date, l'm not reckless but your eyes and nose are the best guides. They didn't have sell by dates when the world was in black and white!
To the OP l would say don't bother, put it down to experience we've all done it, but l think it would have been okay to eat (if you didn't do so) they would err on the side of caution with chicken and dairy products and their sell by dates are always early.
