advice needed on surveys

Hi everyone
i was thinking about doing surveys but then i was reading you have to declare your earnings to tax man now i did this once before (when i did mystrie shops ) i ended up paying more in tax than i earned ( i have a full time job !) was i doing it all wrong??
do i declaire once i have earnt cash ?? or should i do it now ?? what happens if i dont earn anything in the tax year ?? do i have to pay national insurence again ?so many questions !
Any advice would be apreciated!!
