First thing that jumps out at me is bank account fee. What this for if you are already paying an overdraft fee?
How many people are there in your household? £500 pm seems a lot for groceries.
Do you also need life assurance if you have mortgage life assurance?
Can you reduce school meals and do packed lunches instead?

How close are you to the other adults in the family, is it possible they could also be finding fianances a little tough? Why not agree that you are only going to buy for children from now on? Throughout the year, check out the grabbit forum, as theres often fantastic little gifts for kids ben ten etc for about a fiver, I think a little five pound gift and perhaps a small £2 selection box is more than enough for relatives kids, keep an eye out too for offer codes, these REALLY help, I brought an I-TEDDY for £12.50 in the debs sale after xmas, even for your own kids a thousand pounds for xmas, is an awful lot.
I don't have children but surely especially if their young children £100 TOPS. So two kids £200 - £50 for you £50 for wife (even forfit these and get them in the jan sales if possible, and another £150 TOPS for your family. How old are your kids? Is it possible to explain that mum and dad are a little short at the moment, so heres a IOU voucher for xmas, this entitles you to that game/doll whatever but ill be buying it you in the jan sales on boxing day instead, cos lets face it do kids EVER play with everything on xmas day? NOPE
Maybe instead of putting so much money into one day of the year - why not put a little money into taking your kids out? You live near London, theres loads to do for little money there - museums etc Learning to be 'good with money'0 -
Hello surreybloke, i am a relative newbie on here too. Here are some of the things i have been doing in the last two months. I am no longer nearly overdrawn every month and i have saved loads and stopped wasting money.
You can ask your wife to drop a brand at the supermarket. Rather than buying really famous companies buy own brand rice crispies, cereal bars, orange juice etc. I only started this two months ago and cannot believe that there is not a difference in taste.
£20 on cleaning products is excessive. I started my money saving journey 2 months ago and i am still using up old bottles of cleaner from under my sink. There were so much i will be using them for most of the year! Use what you have.
Ring up your cable/phone/internet supplier and threaten to leave, say you have financial problems. They will reduce your bill down but you may lose a few channels.
Keep a spending diary to watch where your money is going. You will start to question everything which is great as it means you will make informed decisions and will certainly be able to pay your bills and hopefully start to save too!
Buy xmas presents etc in the sales, you can buy great things on ebay from branded companies. £83 a month is £996 on presents in a year. At present you cannot afford that.
Don't buy magazines. Look them up on the internet for free!

I come froma family of 5 other brothers and sisters, who all have family and kids too. Believe me, you don't need to be spending that amount on them.
I now have spoken to all the adults, explained that we are trying to ecconomise, and would not be buying the adults anything, and the kids (0 - 15)would get something small, but thoughtfully bought) Out of all the family (and extended family inc'.) I had one woman moan that I was being a cheapskate, but the husband agreed it was a great idea.0 -

What this for if you are already paying an overdraft fee? £16.00 o/draft protection fee...£16 for having a Barclays Addition account that includes breakdown cover and legal advice with a few other things thrown in...£22 amonth for going over my agreed overdraft limit (i go over every month)

I shop at Tesco every single week and my monthly grocery spends are at least half yours (£207 in april, less the month before) and that is for 2 adults, 3 kids, pets and also includes all cleaning and toiletry items, pet food, any drinks for home and stuff for packed lunches. one of the main problems we have is that my wife works for the local county council in a school as a special needs teaching asst and the school have just cut her hrs by 2/3rds as they say there is no money in the buget for what she does...she is now training again to get her NVQ level3 so she can get a job somewhere else. she did the NVQ2 last yr.
