Cash paid in via ATM

 I am confused and livid!!
I paid in some money into an ATM located in my Halifax B.S. branch. I did this because the queque was very long, with only 3 staff on Sat morning and that last Sat I couldn't stand for too long as I have just had both knees operated on. From previous experience I know that the machines get emptied on the same day and somewhere it says that any monies deposited after 3 p.m. will not be credited to your account until the next day. So, I felt safe as I had a bill going out on the Monday - hence the deposit on Sat morning.
Anyway, got the receipt out that said the the funds will not be availabel until Thursday. This was cash I had deposited!!! And point in telling me after the money has gone into the slot!! I was livid. Came home and rang Halifax and they said "sorry, that's the way it is". I asked why cash takes 4 working days to hit my account and they said "because it does... because it takws us that long to credit your account"
What do you do? I felt like going there and saying, "open this ATM and give me my money back and I will pay it over the counter even if my knees start to bleed down my legs. The banks seem to ignore all our efforts to help ourselves out of debt.
Rant over.

Yer its be that way for years, I don't know why it just has. Perhaps someone from the banking community can tell us why? plus can they tell me why it takes up to 9 days for a cheque which is paid into my account to clear but if I pay a business via cheque it takes two/three days to clear?"I AM THE GATEKEEPER OF MY OWN DESTINY" Nacho Libre

I agree, it is totally unfair. I think I heard about six months ago, that someone was looking into this, but haven't heard anything else.
Why, also, do they state 'working days' for clearance, yet charge us interest on weekends as well (they also call at weekends, so why can't they clear cheques at weekends?).I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

I think the 'money before 3pm creditied to your account' being transacted the same day only applies Monday to Friday, so even if you had paid over the counter it may not have been available on the Monday morning. I hope someone who works in banking maybe able to clariify this...0

No, if you pay over the counter it's usually credited to your account that minute, with the Halifax atleast, not sure which banks may hold out till Monday but I think Banks should change their staus of Working Days' to include the weekend as many people now have to work Sat/Sun as our society is more 24/7 kind of place. And with the banks offering internet banking for 24hours / 7 days a week then their old stance on 'working days' needs to be reveiwed."I AM THE GATEKEEPER OF MY OWN DESTINY" Nacho Libre

I used to work for a building society. The money paid in to the atm was manually credited the next working day. The machine was emptied in the morning before the start of business so anything paid in to the atm after then would be credited the following working day.
The credit was backdated to the day you paid it in to the atm though. So if you banked where I worked you could question any charges that had been triggered to be put on your account because you did pay the money in before your bill was due.
Does that help at all?0 -
I bank with the Halifax in suffolk and if i pay cash into the cash machine it always credited the next working day, i have no idea why it would take till thursday. Cheques always take 5 working days with them though, If i pay a cheque through the atm on Monday at 8 in the morning it is always available by friday. Question them as to why some of there branches do it next day and others dont.

Good points here - why are weekends not included? I know for a fact that if I paid over the counter, my money would have been available to me straightaway. I accept that Monday would have been a possibility as I deposited that money on Sat but Thurs? They are making money by getting interest from the Bank of England for 3 working days, not to mention the weekend. Thas is what they are doing.
When I complained to the call centre man, he quite calmly told me he understands what I am saying but there is nothing he can do, perhaps I'd like to go the branch on Monday morning and try and sort it out. Yeah, right!
It just makes me so mad that they take us for complete mugs! If I could, I would take my pay and keep it under a mattress. At least that way I would know how much I have and how far it would go without paying those *ankers all the interest on my overdraft and 'allowing' them to earn interest on my money - interest that they don't pass onto us, the consumers. Arrrgggghhh!!0 -
write them a letter explaining situation with knees and everythin and that you are gonna let everyone know how badly let down you feel by their unsympethetic views and staff, and then threaten them with the financial ombudsman-you wontget charged and should recieve an apology.official dfw nerd club member no 214

Why is a person that handles your money called a broker?!

May I make a suggestion?
I recently had a set-to with the Bank of Scotland (also Halifax) about an incorrectly entered cheque which led to enormous bank charges and a cancelled holiday. Long story, but it took over a week to get sorted out, by which time I was absolutely furious and they were very apologetic and helpful in the end.
Ring the call centre. If they say they can't help, ask to be put on to a person who can. (Stay calm and remember that these people are administering rules they haven't made and often can't help, however sypmathetic they may be!) Possibly they can't do anything, but they must know a 'Man Wot Can'. Politely persevere until you do get through to a person who can help you.
This wasn't a cheque - they had your cash on time. If you go overdrawn it is THEIR fault, not yours. Stay polite, but insist on speaking to someone who can sort this out. If they can't find anyone, I'm sure the Banking Ombudsman will be able to help you.
If they tell you to go into the branch, don't argue. Just say you'll be billing them for your time. (The BofS eventually paid me for mine!) As I told them, I'm not litigious, but enough was enough! Also consider that if you go to the branch and speak in polite but... carrying... tones, you may save a few more people from falling foul of this rather stupid 'rule'. There's always an upside!
This ludicrous situation needs dealing with. I have a copy of the HBoS complaints procedure somewhere. If you PM me I can scan and send it to you. It'll have to be tomorrow from work. It's rare for me to be on this site at weekends.

That is one of the few good things about Nitwits, if I pay in cash in their little slot thingy, it's always credited same day regardless of the time I put it in.[strike]-£20,000[/strike] 0!0
