Att Tim Deegan please!

Hi Tim and everyone!

Please could you advise: we have a king sized bed which is made up of two singles which zip together (the mattress) and a base which can be linked to make one mattress base or unlocked to make two single mattress bases. Approx 17 years old so getting on a bit - as are we!

As I am tired of waking with back and neck pain we have recently split the whole thing into two singles, made up as two separate beds, pushed together and side by side, which helped a bit, but bed or mattress definitely needs replacing!

Question - do we need to replace the whole thing or do you think two new mattresses would do? When I look at all the bed/mattress threads on this forum I just get confused and end up doing nothing!

Thanks so much - Louise

    Hi Louise.

The beds you have are known as zip & link. You need to check to see if they were made as two standard singles (6'3" long), or if they were made to be the same size as a super king size bed when pushed together (6'6" long). As this would make a difference why replacing any part.

To see if the bases need replacing, take the mattresses off. Then lay a straight edge over the base to see if they dip anywhere. If they do, then they will need replacing. If not then have a good feel over the top of the bases to see if there are any soft or uneven areas. If there aren't any, and the bases aren't unstable or creaky, then you shouldn't have to replace the bases.

If you are replacing the mattresses only, then you can still get zip & link mattresses, as this will give you the option to connect them together, and will stop the mattresses sliding apart.

As far as replacing the mattresses goes, this would depend on a few factors:
    • How firm you like your mattress
    • The type of mattress you like
    • Your budget
If I were you I would stay away from big brand names and big chain stores if you want good quality at a low price, and shop on line from a seller who gives a proper satisfaction guarantee that allows you to actually unpack and sleep on the mattress. This way it is in their interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time.
