some turn out to be correct
how do we choose in advance which are the correct ones?

Simply put, people don't want to read about bad times.
In years gone by, one way to bring down the powers that be, was to predict their downfall. The same rings true today and it's probably a good thing they don't print too much negativity from a bearish viewpoint.
I think the situation could be far worse than it is, so far we've done okay.0 -
I'd just like to point out that actually these latest problems were predicted by many eminent mainstream economists at the outset of the Euro-zone. The imminent crunch has also been foreseen on the horizon by numerous commentators for the last 18 months or so, in the wake of Lehman. Among them myself and several other "bulls" in this forum. So I wouldn't give too much credence to Asheron's tin-foil-hat economists or their other predictions on that basis.0

I don't know why
P.S. You should note that there are many people who did predict the 'financial crisis' who are not predicting that we will 'loose' (sic) our pensions, have a world war, riots, have a depression, plague of locusts etc etc.'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -

Predicting things which, over a long enough time are going to happen, is not hard. Economic crashes, wars, plagues, famines, and plagues of locusts, and even frogs falling out of the sky happen. Mostly, people just get through them. Predicting they will happen is a near sure thing. Predicting when they will happen is a hard thing. Personally, I hope they will not happen for a couple of centuries.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”
