Keep getting letters from collection agency worried about contact

Hello, in 2004 I defaulted on a £2000 loan from Abbey National, I lost my job due to Ill health was on benefits & in a bad way so I foolishly ignored the threatening letters, the debt got passed onto about 7 different collection agencies until now it is with Santander.

The last letter just says this debt has now been passed onto us and is asking me to contact them to repay the £1840 I owe.

So what is the best thing to do, is the debt still legally binding?

Have you paid anything in the last 6 years, have you acknowledged the debt to anyone in the last 6 years.
If you are in England the statute barred limit is 6 years, (which month, do you know) its abviously going to be around the 6 year mark.
    (In Scotland, it is5 years)

So we need more info to be able to help.

If they've tried to contact you then it's not statute barred. Just call them and work out a repayment plan.

McKneff thanks, Yes UK resident, No I haven't made any payments or acknowledged the debt to anyone in the last 6 years, October 2004 was the date of the last payment.

But if I contact them now I will be acknowledging the debt, I didn't think a debt could be taken to court if it's under £5000

Just contacting them wont acknowledge the debt.
Admitting in writing or paying something off it will acknowledge it.

So now you have a dilemma,
own up and pay it or lie low till the end of the year.

You could send them 'prove it' lettes which will delay matters.

Wait for others to come along with more help.

They can take legal action for any amount they want paying back. It may also be possible to petition to make you bankrupt for any amount over £750.

Do not contact them at all. Just wait for it to be statute barred. If they try to take you to court, thats when you contact them.
