Debt Collector - Help !

I have been paying up council tax through BCW at £106 per month , now i was about to make a final payment of £300 to clear the account but when i logged in , the system was asking me for £73.21 as the final balance amount followed by the wording ''Current Balance is the amount due on the account' , I have since taken a screen print and made the £73.21 payment before e-mailing them , this was their response ;

Upon checking your account, I noticed you have been credited with £226.79 payment by Glasgow City Council.
I contacted the council when I received your first email as I knew this was incorrect and not an amount you have paid, the council have confirmed the balance as £300.00 and I have had the payment you were credited with in error, reversed. The account now shows the correct amount of £300.00

If you add up what you have paid you will see you still owe £300.00


My question is do they have the right to still ask for this , this was not my error and i even have a letter (as well as the screen prints) from them asking for £73,21 as the final balance ? , Or will be forced to pay the £300

Any advice appreciated.

If they have now corrected the error then yes you will have to pay it. Also if you have emailed them saying you spotted the error then you know it was incorrect so will have to pay the correct amount.

They do still have a right to request it. And you know its due. I would pay it.
