Asda promises to refund shoppers if it is not cheapest supermarket

Just saw this story on bbc news -

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/retailandconsumer/7638656/Asda-promises-to-refund-shoppers-if-it-is-not-cheapest-supermarket.html

Sounds great on paper as we do most of our shopping at asda - can't find the actual website though to check out how it will definitely work. Anyone know anything more about this?

too many comps..not enough time!

I saw this too, can't remember if it was the BBC or ITV. But I do remember the "expert" they had on who explained what the deal was, and why asda are doing it.

Apparently they are losing sales, and their share of the market, so this is designed to bring in more customers.

He then went on to say, with a perfectly straight face and in his best authoritative voice "The fastest growing supermarket today is Morrisons, and Waitrose is growing even faster"

How exactly are they going to do this? its not like where some place like Comet has a "price promise" and you bring along the Argos calalogue for example to prove your point, unless every item exists online (so they can check) or your able to get them to accompany you to the nearest Tescos to show them that infact the quorn fajhita peices which do not appear online are infact half price, its not really possible to do this.

Just seems like alot of hot air and vague promises they will never keep.

Very clever of Asda - getting their customers do undertake price comparisons for them and for free. Because they will only know about those items which they are selling more expensively (AS CUSTOMERS WILL WANT REFUNDS) and so can they will reduce the price to beat off competition.

Products included are a selection available in Tesco, Sainsbury's and maybe Morrisons. Basically you put your receipt details into mysupermarket and they tell you if you'd have been cheaper buying your whole trolley load from somewhere else. If so you'll get a printout voucher to use in Asda next week.

As I see it the bad thing about this is it covers the whole trolley load. Most of your trolley can be more expensive than Tesco, but one decent deal or bogof could wipe this out. (and it's likely if you had shopped in Tesco you'd not have bought 2 of the items that are on bogof at asda iyswim).

    It's only a game

I think this system sounds so tedious that it's unlikely to be used much. Briefly MSE people will have managed to shop wisely and so be excluded while those that throw stuff in the trolley without thinking won't be bothered to put everything into the website.

Thread closed as there is a MSE news article on the same issue.

Sorry I can't merge the threads as this one was started first, however it is only beneficial to have one thread on the go to keep it tidy on here :)
