Credit check pre-completion?

Hi all,
We're very nearly about to exchange and complete on our new home, but I'm a bit concerned about the credit check that I've heard the mortgage provider will run just before completion.
After we had the mortgage offer agreed and come through, we had a few hiccups with other things and we thought about getting some unsecured loans from our banks to "bridge the gap".
However, we were told later on that it's not a good idea to take out any form of loan whilst the house-buying process is going through as most lenders run a credit check just before completion to make sure your circumstances haven't changed, and if they find they have then it could impact the offer they make and could even lead to them withdrawing the offer.
None of the loan applications we made went through, one was cancelled and one was refused (we would have cancelled it anyway) but I'm just wondering if the fact we APPLIED for additional credit could mess up the mortgage offer.
Our credit situation hasn't actually changed - we cancelled the loans before the money could be sent (and within the banks cancellation time limit) and we managed to resolve the problems we were facing through other means. Should I be worried?
